Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder which occurs mostly in old ages; its distinctive feature is the decrease in bone mass, and in bone strength too, which puts a person at risk of fracture. Osteoporosis is called a “silent disease” because there are typically no symptoms until a bone is broken.
Amongst of the most important uncontrollable factors in increasing the risk of osteoporosis can be indicated: aging (in men and women), female gender, the estrogen deficiency after menopause causing the decrease mineral volume in bone. Of course, the decrease of testosterone levels leads to osteoporosis in men. Although osteoporosis occurs in all human races, but Europeans and Asians are more susceptible prone to osteoporosis. The factors leading to osteoporosis, are as follows: increasing aging (in which the destruction of the bone tissue would be more than its production), women menopause (which causes the reduction of bones minerals volume), low testosterone in males, lack of minerals such as calcium, protein and vitamin D, Lack of minerals in poor diets, alcohol consumption, smoking, physical inactivity (which causes the inactivity of bone-forming cells and increased bone loss), excessive weight loss (due to reduction amount of protein in one’s body), some diseases (such as hyperthyroidism and diabetes) and the use of certain drugs (such as corticosteroids and levothyroxine).
Calcium: It is the most abundant mineral in the body. The human body has approximately 1 kg calcium. This element being absorbed by the intestinal wall is useful for strengthening bones and teeth as well as preventing osteoporosis.
Vitamin D: The most important effect of it is to facilitate the intestinal absorption of calcium, and so better absorption of calcium from the diet. It is also effective in absorbing phosphate and magnesium ions. Its other effect is to regulate bone tissue protein and regulate the ratio of phosphorus to calcium in bones, thereby, helping to maintain bone mass.
zinc: It is an important cofactor in the stimulation of osteoblasts, which are bone-forming cells. Zinc is involved in the collagen synthesis of bone tissue, the normal growth of body cells, as well as the healing of wounds and injuries.
magnesium: It plays an essential role in bone mineralization; in addition to, in building bones and teeth and activating the enzymes being effect in energy production. It also prevents calcium deposition in the kidneys and gall bladder. This mineral is needed for the proper functioning of the heart, muscles and kidneys. Magnesium helps regulate levels of calcium, copper, zinc, potassium, vitamin D, and other important nutrients in the body. Its deficiency changes calcium metabolism and the hormone regulating calcium in the body.
